What it is
Phrases of the shape 'Part of what makes X so Y is…', 'One of the things that…', 'Among the reasons…' that promise a list of causes and then deliver exactly one. The 'part of' / 'one of' does no semantic work; it signals the writer's awareness of multiplicity without requiring the writer to produce any.
Why models do it (first principles)
These constructions are heavily rewarded in essayistic and analytical training data because they sound careful — they pre-empt the objection 'but there are other factors' without the writer having to actually enumerate them. The model learned the surface move and applies it as a default frame for any causal claim, even when only one cause is in scope.
How to think about it
It is the grammar of nuance without the substance of nuance. A writer who has actually identified multiple factors names them, or names the one that dominates and says why. A writer hedging against the existence of others without knowing what they are produces 'part of what makes' as a kind of insurance. And the reader can feel that the insurance is paying for nothing. The construction performs intellectual humility while delivering a single-cause claim.
